Nouriel Roubini and Ken Rogoff, both highly respected economists, are in agreement with Sinn Fein's stance in relation to senior bondholders. They clearly point out how our level of soverign debt cannot be borne if the bank debt is not shared by those bondholders who essentially, took big gambles for high payoffs. Of course, these are just another two voices adding to the already crowded field of economists who don't believe that Ireland can pay the bank debt without completely busting the country. What part of "we can't pay" does our government not understand? Read full article

Minister O'Cuiv stunned us all with figures on the VB show last night. He spoke of how spending in education health & welfare increased out of hand during the boom years.
How irresponsible we all are.
Does he not forget that Ireland had the largest class sizes at the start of boom years?
Surprise - we still have the largest class sizes. We still have the worst health service, despite increased spending and now of course with almost half a million people out of work, small wonder that our social welfare bill has seen a four-fold increase.
Sadly, FF politicians seem to only be capable of thinking in three year cycles. It was the Minister's own party that saw us begin from such a low base in the 80's when our public spending was so low. His logic seems to be that we should have kept our spending down and denied community organisations who were trying to put something half decent in place in their own communities. Sorry, minister, but but in my view FF would just have siphoned off even more for the cronies, the golden circles and we would have even more bust developers. Read full article

The passage of the Finance Bill through the Dail today with a majority of three illustrates just how farcical things have become. Fine Gael and Labour will be happy, despite voting against? How are people expected to respect such overt cynicism? The Independents who supported it aren't much better, but when a government is so weak it has to make concessions. This is not good news for Ireland Read full article

Why are Fine Gael and Labour using the cloak of "national stability" to explain their erratic behaviour regarding the Finance Bill?
They should be taking this opportunity to put their own proposals before the people. Instead, we are getting a watered down version of what they would do in Government; while they critise Sinn Fein for its unequivocal opposition to this Bill. In fact they would like it to be passed so they can imlement it, claiming they had no choice as it was passed. It will be interesting to see how this will go later as it may not get passed and then the will be exposed. Read full article

Many people have expressed their determination to use their vote in the forthcoming election to ensure that there is a change of Government. That's not enough. Make sure that you are getting a government that will stand up for you interests. Voting in new parties will not be enough. Every TD that is elected for Sinn Fein will mean a stronger voice for working people, those unemployed and those who are struggling. Read full article
