The current meltdown within the Fine Gael party is happening at a critical time for the country. The big news of last week should have been the two banking reports which confirm what we already knew. They establish beyond any doubt the Government's central role in how we have been brought to the brink of bankruptcy. It is really regrettable that the side-show of Fine Gael's internal conflicts are now centre stage when what we should be doing is considering just what type of leader we have in Brian Cowen. No matter who ends up as leader of Fine Gael, we still have a huge mess to deal with. It certainly doesn't inspire confidence in their ability to lead us anywyere but deeper into it.
